Career Night at Richmond Technical Center Plans Released

When: April 3, 2012
Where: Richmond Technical Center
What Time: 6:30- 8:00p.m.

Purpose: Expose parents and students to the wide range of meaningful careers
available and to showcase the CTE Commission and the Richmond
Technical Center

Program: (In Room 201 --:Auditorium Style 200 to 250 Seats)
• CTE honor society student will welcome guests and introduce Councilman
Conner
• Councilman Conner will provide purpose and acknowledge invited guests
• Remarks from Mayor Jones and Superintendent Brandon
• RTC student introduce speaker
• Speaker
• Space will be provided in the hall outside room 201 for apprenticeship programs
• RTC student ambassadors will conduct tours of the Richmond Technical Center
• Select students will be in the cafeteria with student projects to share
• College Fair will be in the Media Center

Refreshments- Menu Suggestions: (Food will be provide by the RTC culinary arts
students and served in room 201 A after the program)
• Chicken Tenders
• Pig in the Blankets
• Pin Wheel Mini Wraps (Turkey, Ham, Cheese)
• Chicken Salad Finger Sandwiches

Student and Parent Invitations
• Flyer developed by students at the RTC - Send home March 19th
• Promote at March Principal and Assistant Principal Meetings
• Use Parent Link and send message home to select families
• RTC will also send invitation to their partners and RTC Council members


Media Coverage
• Work with RPS Public Relation Office to secure print and media coverage
Student Materials
• Each family will receive a folder or bag with career pathway materials and
information about the Richmond Technical Center

Chairman Doug Conner called the meeting to order at 12:12 p.m.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the January 4, 2012 were adopted unanimously.

Old Business

· Victoria Oakley, Chief Academic Officer for Richmond Public Schools, discussed possible meeting dates for the Richmond Technical Center visit; more dates will be discussed at the next commission meeting.

· Roy Reynolds updated the commissioners on guest speakers for the CTE 2012 Forum. Mr. Reynolds discussed solidifying an exact date with Richmond Public Schools, before contacting guest speakers.

New Business


· Discussion

Job Corps representatives discussed the purpose and mission of Job Corps. Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the US Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.

Commissioners discussed the possibility of bringing a Job Corps location to Richmond and representatives on hand discussed the outreach and admission process with commissioners.

Approval of Minutes

Kim Gray moved to approve the minutes from the September 7, 2011 meeting.  The minutes were adopted unanimously.

Old Business
·         Chair Conner to update on meetings with Dr. Yvonne Brandon and Dr. Michael Rao

Mr. Conner reported on his meeting with Dr. Yvonne Brandon, Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools and Dr. Michael Rao, President of Virginia Commonwealth University.  Mr. Conner stated that the meeting was very productive and that VCU is more than willing to partner with the Career and Technical Education Commission on future projects. 

·         Kim Gray trip to the Cleveland NCAT forum

Ms. Kim Gray reported on her trip to Cleveland for the National Center for Arts and Technology Forum.  Ms. Gray stated that the National Center for Arts & Technology organization offers an innovative approach to education, seeking to bring back credibility and legitimacy to the fabric of urban communities.   Ms. Gray offered to share some of the contact information of the conference presenters with the commissioners. 
New Business
·         Expenditure of CTE Funds

Mr. Conner distributed a copy of the expenditure and treasury report of CTE Funds.  Steve Taylor, Council Policy Analyst, answered questions regarding the expenditure and treasury reports.   A copy is filed in these minutes.

·         Discussions

Commission members continued their discussion on bringing Job Corp to Richmond and discussed procedures to introduce industry contacts to Richmond Public Schools and the Richmond Technical Center.  The commission also adopted its mission statement and vision unanimously.

Approval of Minutes

Roy Reynolds moved to approve the minutes from the July 6, 2011 meeting.  The minutes were adopted unanimously.

Old Business

·         Discuss plan for a New Forum on CTE and Sponsorship Ideas

Commissioners discussed plans for hosting a forum on technical education and getting local businesses and universities to serve as co-sponsors in an effort to inform citizens and businesses about the job market for students and people who have certifications in areas with technical expertise.   Logistics of forum location and date were discussed as well as possible presenters including Richmond Technical Center & J. Sargeant Reynolds.  A possible forum location was “Play” located at 1801 E. Cary St. Richmond, VA. 

·         Draft Mission Statement

Commissioners agreed on a mission statement and vision.  The mission states:  To provide ways of enhancing educational and economic opportunities for students in fields requiring career and technical education; and to enhance relationships of employers, laborers, and educators in order to improve the economic well-being and career opportunities for youth and transitioning adults.  The vision states: A future of lifelong learning, training, and economic opportunity for all Richmonders. 

New Business
·         Manchester Bidwell’s invitation to the NCAT meeting in Cleveland, Ohio on September 26th

Councilman Conner invited members to attend the annual National Center for Academic Transformation’s annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio.  Mr. Conner suggested that the commission send at least one individual to the conference.

·         Reports
Rayford Harris presented a report on the Perkins Educational Grants.  The report contained information on the creation of the grant as well as how Richmond Public School System implements the Perkins Act.  Johnny Cates reported that recommendations need to be made to the Richmond Technical Center regarding medical assistants and the new practice changes in the profession regarding standards. 

·         Discussions

The commission discussed developing a process by which businesses and laborers can partner up with the Richmond Technical Commission as well as developing a possible subcommittee on bringing Job Corps to Richmond in the future.  Councilman Conner also discussed developing an ad hoc subcommittee to visit Workforce Alliances in the city of Virginia Beach, Arlington and the surrounding cities.  Mr. Conner stated that the commission use one of its vacant seats to add someone from the hospitality industry in Richmond to the commission.

Councilman Doug Conner called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. and presided.


Committee members introduced themselves and provided information on their background as it relates to career and technical education.

Discussion

Commission members discussed the direction and goals of the CTE Commission and agreed to utilize sub-committees. 

Commission member Jacek Ghosh was tasked with facilitating a conference call between the Commission and Bill Strickland, CEO of Manchester-Bidwell, to discuss the possibilities of utilizing his services in Richmond.  Based in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Manchester-Bidwell is a corporation designed to train individuals in various technical and educational fields in order to help them become productive members of society.  The conference call is to take place at the October CTE Commission meeting. 

Mr. Conner regretfully informed the Commission of the passing of Commission member Demetrius Carter.  A resolution from City Council in remembrance of Mr. Carter will be forthcoming.
